Realising every child's potential

Lessons and Practice

Students receive a 30-minute lesson with one of our Instrumental Music teachers. These lessons usually comprise of small groups of two to four students, and run on a weekly rotating basis.

Training Band students begin practicing for 5 minutes, 5 days a week. By the end of their first year, they are required to practice for 15 minutes, 5 days a week.

Intermediate Band students are required to practice for 15 – 20 minutes, 5 days a week.

Concert Band students are required to practice for more than 20 minutes, 5 days a week.

Parents are asked to be involved with their child’s music education by:

  • Asking them what they have learnt in lessons/band and what they are required to work on during the week (this checks the child’s understanding of what their teacher has asked of them);
  • Giving them a special, dedicated space to practice every day, complete with a music stand and a pencil to write in their practice diary;
  • Encouraging them to perform in front of family and friends at every opportunity;
  • Making it fun! Practice is not supposed to be a chore – in fact, it can be a highly creative and enjoyable experience for the whole family. Ask for song requests, have them play some of their favourite pieces from their lessons for you and let your child know they are valued for having chosen such a worthwhile and life-enriching hobby. Positive encouragement from the whole family will enhance your child’s musical experience and allow them to excel within the band program.
