PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE

I am very happy to report that it has been a very COVID safe week here at RGLPS and our students are for the most part, just happy to be back on site. Whilst we are still unable to have parents attend our final whole school assembly the gradual reduction of restrictions will allow for a few extra moments next week. Please keep reading as I update you with all the new COVID restrictions.

COVID Safe Practices

Key Changes:

  •   – Staff and secondary school students aged 12 or older across Victoria must wear face masks indoors at school and on public transport, and masks are recommended outdoors at school where physical distancing of 1.5m cannot be maintained.
  •   – Camps and overnight stays can take place within Victoria, with no travel restrictions. Multiple schools can attend camps providing school groups remain separated and do not share common facilities at the same time.
  •   – Excursions and incursions are permitted throughout Victoria.
  •   – Indoor and outdoor interschool sport can proceed throughout Victoria, and outdoor and indoor contact and non-contact physical activity is permitted.

Instrumental Music Program

COVID safe practices are in place to allow for the tutorials to run as normal. Band rehearsals will continue to be run online as we wait for the all clear.

QR Codes and Onsite Visitors

Parents are now permitted onsite however density limits continue to apply for indoor spaces. We have been asked to limit the number of non-essential visitors to the site at this stage. We encourage you to walk in and out of the school grounds as needed. Given the volume of parents at drop off and pick up it is appreciated that you continue to wear masks as the 1.5 metre distance is very difficult to maintain.

If you do access a building it is mandated to use one of the QR codes located at every entrance way of the school.

Staffing News

It is with great excitement and a little sadness that I announce that Cathie Sutton has accepted an assistant principal role at Meadows Primary School. This role will commence on the first day of term 3 2021. Cathie has worked at RGLPS since 2016 as a Teacher, Teacher of the Deaf and Learning Specialist. She has brought to us expertise in best practice inclusive education, targeted intervention, amazing knowledge of curriculum and pedagogy and best of all a calm, rational, emotionally intelligent, and solutions-based mindset that has assisted the school to develop and improve in the fundamental pursuits of education. She will be missed by students, staff and the community and we wish her every success with her future pursuits.

Take care everyone,

Kirrily Lamers

WELLBEING

Looking after your child's wellbeing

Wellbeing comes from physical, mental and emotional health. For children and young people, there are many things that build positive wellbeing.

Wellbeing can come from:

  •   – understanding and managing emotions
  •   – having good relationships
  •   – experiencing a sense of accomplishment
  •   – taking part in healthy activities, getting lots of sleep and eating well

Keeping your child active and eating healthy

Physical Activity

Physical activity will boost your child’s physical and mental health and help improve their wellbeing. It also helps with concentration, memory and solving problems. Keeping active is also a great way to support your child’s learning.

For ideas on how to keep your child active, visit: FUSE: Physical activity or https://www.sportaus.gov.au/p4l

Here’s a couple of activities for the whole family to try

Healthy eating

Eating well is another way we can help maintain our physical and mental health and wellbeing. Making lunches with your child can help to teach them healthy eating habits.

As much as possible, your child should be eating a wide variety of food, including:

  •   – vegetables
  •   – fruits
  •   – grains and cereal based foods
  •   – lean meat or protein alternatives
  •   – dairy foods
  •   – plenty of water.

Depending on your child’s age, they could help with planning a meal, shopping on a budget and cooking. Have your child plan and prepare dinner, do some simple baking or write up the shopping list.

Try to avoid foods and drinks that are high in sugar, salt and fat, and avoid offering these foods as rewards for good behaviour.

For fun food related activities ideas which can be completed at home, visit: FUSE: Fun with food: Activities.

TEACHING AND LEARNING

'Just Right' Reading and its Link to Reading Achievement

An Renaissance Learning international study (2015 – 2016), has found that fifteen minutes of daily reading seems to be the ‘magic number’ at which students start seeing substantial positive gains in their reading achievement. Unsurprisingly, children who read for longer than fifteen minutes per day see even greater gains. The study found that children who read infrequently, averaging under fifteen minutes per day, saw the lowest levels of reading achievement and growth.

At RGLPS, we encourage our students to engage in Independent Reading on a daily basis, both at school and as part of their home learning. At school, each student has a book box where they can store texts for their personal independent reading. Students select items for their book boxes which are ‘good fit’ or ‘just right’ for them, in terms of both the text complexity and interest level. Each student is encouraged to have a balance of fiction and non-fiction texts that are ‘just right’ for them, and these texts are swapped on a regular basis.

In the first few years of school, we teach all students to use the ‘five finger rule’ to determine if a book is too easy, too hard or ‘just right’ for them. There is little point in reading a book if the child is unable to decode the words and concepts because it they are too difficult – we all know the ultimate purpose of reading is comprehension and understanding! Once children have control of decoding, the focus shifts to comprehension. As teachers, we often find that students (sometimes encouraged by well-meaning parents), attempt to read books with big words which are really aimed at an older audience. It is important to help children understand that just because they can decode and read the words aloud, this does not mean that they understand the text and that it is right for them. Hence, is also important that children are given age appropriate books.

The ‘five finger rule’ works is outlined in the graphic below:

Please encourage your child to use this strategy when selecting reading material to determine if the book is at the right level for them. After this, don’t forget to get your child to cross check whether the topic or themes appeal to them. By reading ‘just right’ books of interest, children are also much more likely to develop an enthusiastic habit of reading for pleasure. This brings us back to my initial point; that the longer a learner spends reading, the greater likelihood of that ‘significant positive reading achievement.’ Please feel free to contact me or see your child’s teacher if you would like more information on how to support your child’s reading.

Term 3 2021 Team Newsletters

Our hard working team leaders are currently finalising their Term 3 Newsletters. Team Newsletters provide parents and carers with an overview of the learning foci for the upcoming term, as well as important dates and other useful  information. These newsletters will be released to parents on Friday 25th June (last day of Term 2) via a Compass alert and link. They can also be accessed from June 25th using the following pathway: Compass -> School Documentation -> Year Level Newsletters -> 2021 -> Term 3.

We encourage all parents/carers to make time to read these newsletters and take note of important dates and information for the upcoming term.

Have a great final week of term and enjoy the lifting of some restrictions!

Wonder Recycling Rewards - Bread Bag Collection

Hello Parents and Teachers,

Firstly I would like to say a big congratulations to all of our families for the amount of bread bags we have collected for the Wonder White Bread Bag Recycling Competition so far! It has been wonderful to see so many happy faces dropping off their bags into the collection bins at the office each day as we get closer to our target of 25kg of plastic. It has also been great to talk to students about the benefits of recycling plastic rather than letting it go into landfill.

The competition closes on the 16th of July, so there is still plenty of time to collect bread bags and bring them in to school.

The bread bags do not have to be Wonder White, they may be any bread brand or bakery bread bags (you may also hand in any wrap/tortilla bags as well).

Please ask your family and friends to collect them for our school – there will be 5 lucky schools that receive the grand prize of new playground equipment made from recycled plastic and all schools will receive 500 points per kilogram of plastics collected to spend on sports equipment.

Thanks for your help everyone!
