 PRINCIPALS’ REPORT

Things are heating up here at RGLPS. Today was the beginning of our 2023 leadership process with all students in year 5 who were looking for roles in our various leadership positions having an opportunity to share their platforms today. With extensive opportunities to support the school in a leadership position, it is amazing to see how many students confidently present in front of an audience of hundreds. I am always so proud of their ability to have a go, articulate their points and just manage to present to so many.

We have also commenced our festivals of music, with many students performing during breaks and all of our bands busily getting ready for the upcoming final instrumental music concert.

Statewide Orientation Day

We are once again coming to that time when our students will step up into their 2023 classroom. On Tuesday the 13th of December students will spend the day with their 2023 teacher and classmates. Our 2023 Prep students will also spend the first part of the day in their classroom. We anticipate that the majority of our Year 6 students will transition to their new Secondary School during this time but we will still provide supervision for students who do not attend a transition day. The purpose of the day is for our students to step up into their new learning spaces, familiarise themselves with new people and prevent the natural nerves and anxiety they may be feeling if they did not have the opportunity to see what is expected. A range of getting to know you and team building activities will be provided on the day.

Celebrate International Day of People with Disability with RGLPS

International Day of People with Disability (IDPwD) is a United Nations day celebrated on 3 December each year to increase public awareness, understanding and acceptance of people with disability.

Don’t forget that we will be hosting a special assembly on the 5th of December at 9:00am to celebrate this important day.

We would love to see parents and families in attendance to help us celebrate.

Christmas Bushwazee

Don’t forget to keep the calendar clear and get your bush dance shoes ready for our first ever Bushwazee on the 12th of December from 5:30pm on the triangle.

Take care,

Parental Controls

At school we work hard to ensure a safe online environment is used for student learning. We are always monitoring student use on computers and the information they are accessing. The internet is such a powerful source of information which can be used to enhance understanding and create new learning experiences.

However, with such an expansive environment there is a need to keep a close eye on our children and the content they are engaging with. Internet filters are a great way to reduce the risk of our children engaging with unwanted/unsafe materials.

The eSaftey Commissioner has some great resources to help you set up your home internet/computers to ensure these risks are minimized. https://www.esafety.gov.au/parents/issues-and-advice/parental-controls

The following information comes from the link above.

Use parental controls

Parental controls are software tools that allow you to monitor and limit what your child sees and does online.

They can be set up to do things like:

· Block your child from accessing specific websites, apps or functions (like using a device’s camera, or the ability to buy things).

· Filter different kinds of content — such as ‘adult’ or sexual content, content that may promote self-harm, eating disorders, violence, drugs, gambling, racism and terrorism.

· Allow you to monitor your child’s use of connected devices, with reports on the sites they visit and the apps they use, how often and for how long.

· Set time limits, blocking access after a set time.

If a device or program is shared by multiple members of your family, you should be able change the tool settings to reflect each user’s age and skills.

During Term 1 in 2023 we will be running parent sessions and promoting webinars to help all families understand and ensure they have up to date information regarding internet safety.

As always, feel free to reach out should you have any questions.

TEACHING AND LEARNING

Make the time for Non-Fiction!

Many of our Golf Links students love reading and this is something that our teachers and parent community are very proud of. Today, I would like to point out the importance of including non-fiction, as well as fiction texts in your child’s regular reading material.

Whilst reading fiction helps children interpret and infer, build empathy, and develop focus, non-fiction reading builds background knowledge, curiosity and is often the springboard for new learning and interests. Through non-fiction, we learn about history, science and about other cultures and places. Non-fiction builds overall general knowledge and make one more ‘well-rounded’. By reading memoirs and biographies, we can deepen our understanding of the human condition and learn valuable life lessons. Research recommends that around half of children’s reading material is fiction and the other half is non-fiction, so I encourage you to expose your child to information texts and model reading non-fiction in your home. Borrow non-fiction when you visit the library with your child and read non-fiction online to balance out their reading diet. You never know, your child may discover a new interest or passion from their widened reading!

ICAS Mathematics

ICAS Mathematics certificates have finally arrived at the school. Students achieving a higher place certificate (Merit, Credit, Distinction, High Distinction) will be presented with these at assembly next Monday November 28th at 9am. Participation certificates will be distributed by classroom teachers.

Please note: ICAS have indicated a marking system error on the initial Year 3 and 4 ICAS Mathematics results this year. This is the cause of the delay in delivery of the ICAS Mathematics certificates in 2022. Initial results listed in the online results portal for Mathematics may have been incorrect for students in Year 3 and 4. These results have now been updated and the ICAS Mathematics certificates will reflect the accurate score each child achieved.

RGLPS Policies

A reminder that RGLPS publishes policies to the school community via two avenues. Updated policies are uploaded to both Compass and the school website once ratified by School Council or the Principal.

MATHS NEWS

Maths Riddle

Well done to those who attempted the ‘Seven Up’ challenge from last week’s newsletter. One of several possible solutions to the challenge is:

Here is this week’s Maths Riddle. I’ll share the answer in the newsletter next week.

‘Anagrams’ Challenge An anagram is a word of phrase made up of letters of another word. These are all anagrams made up from maths words. Can you work them out?

Hint: Try rearranging the letters to make other words until you discover a word related to maths. Extra challenge: Create some of your own maths anagrams for a family member or friend to solve.

If you’d like to share your response or have your working out featured in our newsletter, please send your solutions to sarah.mclellan@education.vic.gov.au
