 PRINCIPALS’ REPORT

Welcome back to term 3. It has been a chilly but positive start to the year with many very happy and engaged learners working in their classrooms. It has been wonderful to start the term with our interschool sports finals and we look forward to a fun filled term jammed with some fantastic activities including our Book Week celebrations, Arts and Writers festival and our music concert.

Professional Practice Days

The Department of Education has again advised the recommendation that all Victorian Schools hold 1 of the remaining 2 professional practice days of 2022 on the same day for all Teachers. We have worked with our staff and the school council to arrange for this day to be held at the least disruptive moment for our students and families. We will hold the professional practice day on the final day of term 4 the 20th of December. Please make alternative arrangements for student supervision on this day. We will engage with TheirCare and attempt to arrange care for the 20th.

2022 Book Week

Don’t forget to save the date. RGLPS will be celebrating Book Week with a ‘Book Character Parade Assembly’. Students will be invited to dress as their favourite character on Monday 22nd August at 9am. This year’s theme is ‘Dreaming With Eyes Open.’ I have already had a few students eager to know the date as they tell me that they need time to prepare their costumes. I can’t wait and am planning to unleash one of my own favourite characters on the 22nd.

COVID 19 Information

A reminder that As part of the changes, from 11.59pm Friday 24 June 2022, parents and carers who have COVID-19 can transport their non-COVID-19 children via private vehicle to their primary or secondary school when an alternative person is not available to assist.

This means that parents and carers will be able to leave COVID self-isolation to take their non-COVID-19 child to school via a private vehicle.

The parent or carer must travel directly to and from the school only. They must remain in the vehicle at all times, unless it is reasonably necessary to leave the vehicle to walk the child to and from the entrance of the school safely. They must wear a face mask at all times.

Students can exit vehicles at the kiss and drop and there is always someone there on duty to support them into the school.

Family members are asked to continue reporting positive COVID-19 cases to both the Department of Health and our own testing portal.

You must also let the school know if your child is a close contact. Students who are close contacts and want to attend should still take 5 RATs over 7 days and wear a face mask whilst indoors if they are aged 8 years or over. Please note that RATs are provided if you would like them.

Students should continue to stay home if they are unwell, even if they test negative on a RAT.

Thank you for your support as we continue to make these adjustments.

Take care,

Working Bee

On the 19th of June, we held our first working bee for quite some time. We focused on clearing weeds and invasive saplings from the front garden entrance area. As most of you would have seen we had stockpiled two large piles of mulch to be spread. Our turnout was small but everyone came with energy and enthusiasm to help out and achieve our goal. What a difference this makes to the entrance!

I wish to thank all who came and gave up a couple of hours that Sunday morning. Without your support we simply wouldn’t be able to complete these tasks. We will be running more working bees over the coming months. We are planning to continue to have small(ish) projects that can be completed in a few hours. Thanks again to our hard workers. If you see them around, give them a socially distanced pat on the back!

Provisional Psychologist

Hi! My name is Rebecca, and I am a provisional (student) psychologist, studying my Master of Educational Psychology at the University of Melbourne. I have a passion for the mental health and wellbeing of young people and supporting them to achieve their best at school, home, and beyond. I am so pleased to be conducting my final placement at RGLPS, and it is wonderful to be a part of the community. Prior to RGLPS, I have worked in private practice, and with the student support services with the Department of Education and Training. You’ll find me in the 5/6 building, coffee-in-hand – come say hello! Outside of work, I love spending weekends on long drives, dancing at my local studio, and going out for yummy meals with friends.

TEACHING AND LEARNING

2022 RGLPS Arts and Writers Festival is only a few weeks away..!

Despite the dreary and cold weather, we have many exciting things planned! The biggest one being the RGLPS Arts and Writing Festival, which will take place in week nine. Every child in the school will have a work of art and an original writing piece on display in the hall around the theme ‘Old Worlds, New Worlds, Other Worlds’. The school will hold an Opening Ceremony on the evening of Monday 5th September at 6pm and we invite parents and friends along to celebrate the creativity of our wonderful RGLPS students. All classes will also have opportunity to view the festival displays and participate in an incursion with a professional author across the week. Please keep an eye on Compass and the weekly newsletter for updates about Arts and Writing Festival events over the coming weeks.

2022 RGLPS Arts and Writing Festival Poster Design Competition

RGLPS students are invited to design a poster to advertise the Arts and Writer’s Festival and show off their creativity. Please see the rear of this newsletter for further information about the poster competition. Named entries should by handed into the front office by Friday 29th July (end of week 3).

Maths Riddle

Welcome back to school! We are all looking forward to commencing our learning in classrooms for Term Three. Well done to those who attempted last term’s ‘Find the Pattern’ challenge. The answer to the challenge is:

Here’s this week’s Maths Riddle. I’ll share the answer in the newsletter next week.

Follow the Path Challenge

Follow the arrows to move from start to finish, adding the numbers as you go. Which route will give you the largest total? Which group will give you the smallest total?

Hint: Try different routes, recording the totals as you go until you find the largest and smallest totals.

Extra Challenge: Can you find all possible totals and order them from smallest to largest?

If you’d like to share your response or have your working out featured in our newsletter, please send your solutions to sarah.mclellan@education.vic.gov.au

SPORT NEWS

Table Tennis

Thanks to our efforts scoring points last year in the RH Sports competitions, we were able to select free table tennis equipment for our school! With the wet weather rolling in this week, we finally were able to give our new nets and balls a try. Here are a few photos of 1LF having fun in the hall 🙂

Football

Congratulations to our AFL team on making the District Semi -Final.  With the team ravaged by illness and injury, the team played gallantly, but were unable to win against a strong Banyule team on the day.  St Martin’s ultimately won the Grand Final.

Teeball

Congratulations to both our girls and boys teeball teams that won their Grand Finals today!!!

The girls team won their semi final against a very strong Viewbank team that pushed them all the way.  Our girls played the match of their lives in the grand final against St Martins , winning 15 – 7.

The boys team played St Martins in the semi final and won with a very disciplined display.  In the grand final we played against Heidelberg and won convincingly 13-3.  The boys played the best game they have played all season.
