 PRINCIPALS’ REPORT

What a whirlwind of a term it has been thus far. It was wonderful this week to meet our 2024 prep students. As I walked into one classroom, the teacher asked if any of the young people in attendance knew who I was. One young person commented that he did in fact know me, and I quote, “She is the guy who says hello to everyone”. I certainly think that I might add professional greeter to my CV. I do always like to get in early with our new preps as there are many new names to learn before 2024 begins.

Christmas Carols on the Triangle

On the 7th of December we will be holding a family picnic on the triangle as a social event for our families. Christmas carols will be played in the background with students and families alike encouraged to sing along. We are hoping for a sausage sizzle and some pleasant weather, but families are also able to bring along a picnic blanket and dinner on the night. Please keep the date free and further information will be announced soon.

Rememberance Day 2023

On Saturday Jelina Jibby and her family attended the remembrance day ceremony at the Watsonia RSL. Upon the conclusion of the event, Jelina was presented with an RSL scholarship award. Jelina is the only recipient from RGLPS this year with the extensive criteria focusing on the all round learning skills and values that Jelina has displayed throughout her primary educational experiences. It was with great pride that we presented Jelina for this award.

Parent Support Seminar

We have had good feedback from this series of seminars run by health ability. This will be the last one for the year. If you are looking for ideas or supports, please don’t hesitate to reach out. Another great resource is found at: https://raisingchildren.net.au/. This website contains heaps of great information about child development and answers a range of common questions.

Student Celebrations

It is a wonderful time of the year. We get to see all of the students’ hard work and dedication to learning pay off. We have had several groups working in our extension and enrichment program through Maths Olympiad and Tournament Of The Minds. They have achieved amazing results and we would like to say a huge WELL DONE to all of these students.

2023 Premiers Reading Challenge

I have received a number of enquiries about what is happening with the Premier’s Reading Challenge certificates for 2023? We are still waiting delivery of these 2023 certificates. When they arrive, certificates will be presented to those students who completed the Challenge at a future school assembly.

More about our new spelling program for 2024 - 'Spelling Mastery"

As outlined several newsletters back, next year RGLPS will be introducing Spelling Mastery as its spelling program for Years 1-6. Spelling Mastery is a direct instruction scripted spelling program that incorporates the three approaches to teaching spelling (whole-word, phonemic, and morphemic knowledge). Spelling Mastery is an evidence based program used to great success to a ‘similar school’ to RGLPS (Bentleigh West Primary School).

During the last three weeks, students in Prep – Year 5 have completed a quick placement test to provide the school with data about their Spelling Mastery starting level for 2024. All students will receive a Spelling Mastery workbook as part of their book packs in 2024 based on the level they were assessed as working within. Students are then grouped for spelling lessons based on how they perform on this Placement Test. There are six developmental levels from A to F and each level has 120 lessons that will take the whole year to work through. Each lesson takes 20 – 30 minutes each.

Different teachers will run a different level of the program during several concurrent sessions each week. This means that all the classes in a year level will sync up their weekly spelling lessons. Teachers will have a mix of students from across the year level for spelling for the year, rather than trying to differentiate for a wide spread of ability within their class. This way the spelling program is better targeted at the spelling level your child is working at.

RGLPS teachers will undertake additional training on how to deliver this program in early 2024.

Have a great week everyone!
