 PRINCIPALS’ REPORT

It has been a very big week for our Year 6 students. As you know, we have made some changes to our camping program with single Year level camps and an alteration to the experience a key to further enriching our program. The Year 6 students went on our first Urban Camp on Monday and though we have some very tired students and staff, it was a wonderful experience for our Year 6 cohort. My personal favourite experience was the nighttime zoo tour but it was also wonderful to see our students build up their stamina, resilience and team work skills in a different way to the standard adventure camps. It is also always a treat to see our students in a different environment as the step out of their comfort zone and really shine. Looking for to some more new experiences later in the year.

WE WANT OUR PARENTS / CAREGIVERS / GUARDIANS TO TELL US WHAT THEY THINK!

Our school is conducting a survey to find out what parents / caregivers / guardians think of our school. The Parent / Caregiver / Guardian Opinion Survey is an annual survey offered by the Department of Education that is designed to assist schools in gaining an understanding of families’ perceptions of school climate, student behavior, and student engagement. The survey is optional but we encourage all families to participate. Our school will use the survey results to help inform and direct future school planning and improvement strategies.

All families are invited to participate in the survey.

The Parent / Caregiver / Guardian Opinion Survey will be open from Monday 7 August to Friday 8 September 2023.

The survey will be conducted online, only takes 20 minutes to complete, and can be accessed at any convenient time within the survey period on desktop computers, laptops, tablets or smartphones. The online survey will be available in English and 10 other languages including Arabic, Greek, Hakha Chin, Hindi, Japanese, Punjabi, Simplified Chinese, Somali, Turkish, and Vietnamese.

The survey results will be communicated to parents / caregivers / guardians through annual reporting and through our newsletter and school council. Please contact us if you would like more information.

Book Week

RGLPS will hold a ‘Book Character Dress Up Assembly’ to celebrate CBCA Book Week on Monday 21st August. The assembly will be held at 9:10am on the basketball court. Students are invited to dress up as a favourite book character inspired by the 2023 Book Week theme ‘Read, Grow, Inspire.’ Prizes will be available for creative costumes in every year level.

Across Book Week, all classes will engage in fun activities around children’s literature and have opportunity to explore Children’s Book Council of Australia nominated texts for 2023.

We would love to see lots of parents/carers at our Book Week assembly, so please take note of the date and time if you are keen to attend.

Take care,

TEACHING & LEARNING

Combating Perfectionist Tendencies

All young people benefit from an awareness of their personal learning strengths and how their brain learns at its best. This provides a foundation for navigating life successfully. High performing children can ricochet between feeling anxious, perfectionistic and overwhelmed to feeling underwhelmed and that school is ‘boring’, based on the learning challenges they encounter. There is often a significant mismatch between their intellectual abilities and capacity to manage emotions under pressure.

Academically high performing students are also diagnosed with higher rates of anxiety than the general population. These children often have high self-belief and confidence in areas they are capable in but are overly critical about their abilities in those areas they find challenging. This may be especially the case when past success has come easily. This ‘perfectionism’ can be useful at times but can also hinder learning. When perfectionist tendencies are a positive, a child might persevere with tasks until they are resolved, develop deep learning and creative solutions to problems. Perfectionism can be a negative however if children don’t succeed the first time they attempt something. It can trigger a ‘meltdown’, the child might refuse at attempt a task, or avoid something where they fear they might ‘fail’.

Ways you can support at home if your child leans towards perfectionism:

  • Support the child to build from their personal strengths. Leveraging off a strength will serve to increase engagement and overall self-belief.
  • Studying the lives of successful people will also assist children to understand that adversity and setbacks are to be expected on the path towards any great achievement. Help your child understand that all breakthroughs in learning and knowledge come about due to persistent, sustained effort. Support children to learn that they might not be able to do something ‘yet’ but if they keep persevering, they can develop the desired skills and knowledge.
  • Model and share times where you have persisted with a challenging task until you learnt a new skill.

Having a positive sense of self efficacy and an ability to manage challenges is key to living a happy life. Please make a time to talk with your child’s teacher if you feel your child needs additional support in this area.

Tournament of Minds

Huge congratulations to the seven students selected for this year’s RGLPS Tournament of Mind (TOM) Team: Tom B, Abigail S, Ella M, Blythe V, Madeline S, William P and Ellie V.

Selection for the 2023 team was hotly contested this year after our 2022 TOM Team won through to the Victorian State Final. The 2023 RGLPS TOM Team will work intensely over the next four weeks in the lead up to the Northern Metro Final at La Trobe University. The Team will work together to prepare for their chosen Long-Term Challenge and respond to a Spontaneous Challenge at the regional final.

For the Long-Term Challenge, the team must present a response within a 10 min period by writing a script, performing, and making all props and costumes, while meeting the complex criteria for their Challenge. There are strict TOM rules to comply with, which also exclude external assistance – hence children learn a lot about problem solving, collaboration and organisation! Scoring is based on creativity, teamwork, group thinking processes as well as the ability to address the criteria for their challenge.

Best of luck to all participating students as they embark on this fun but very demanding task!

I hope everyone has a great week!
